Spinning Jenny
Spinning Jenny in Nijverdal is a pioneering circular yarn spinning mill. They source recycled textiles and process them into high-quality new yarns for products ranging from car seat covers and carpets to household textiles. While they are a modern, highly innovative enterprise, underwriters viewed them through a very different lens. Industrial spinning is a vanishing industry in the Netherlands, with only two mills remaining. For decades, insurers have associated the trade with dust-filled facilities, substandard housekeeping, and an elevated fire risk. Consequently, Spinning Jenny was saddled with an extortionate premium based on a risk profile that was deeply outdated. They knew the numbers didn’t add up but lacked the analytical tools to challenge the status quo.
We connected with Spinning Jenny via LinkedIn. During our initial site visit, it became instantly clear that the industry stereotype did not apply here. We found modern, high-tech machinery, integrated $CO_2$ detection systems, and an impeccable working environment. It was a completely different world from what underwriters assumed. We proposed an independent risk assessment. Following a rigorous on-site inspection, we compiled a comprehensive risk report and presented it to the insurance markets to demonstrate that the traditional risk profile was entirely unjustified.
The data was undeniable. During the formal inspections, underwriters issued zero risk recommendations—confirming exactly what we had observed on day one. For the very first time, Spinning Jenny’s risk was valued accurately. They secured bespoke coverage at a fair premium, precisely aligned with the actual state of their operations. It is a textbook example of what happens when a broker takes the time to truly look. By mapping the true risk profile and presenting it transparently to the market, a business gets exactly what it deserves: insurance that fits. No more, no less.
